A suicide bombing and armed assault on a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan killed multiple officers and injured several others. The attack highlighted continuing militant violence in the region near the Afghan border.
Emergency crews search through rubble after a suicide bombing targeted a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan.
At least a dozen police officers were killed after militants carried out a suicide bombing and coordinated assault on a security post in northwestern Pakistan, authorities said Sunday. The attack took place in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, an area that has experienced a rise in militant violence in recent years.
Officials said attackers drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the police checkpoint before opening fire on security personnel. The blast caused major structural damage to the compound and nearby buildings, trapping some officers beneath the rubble. Rescue teams and emergency workers were deployed to the scene as fighting continued in the area following the explosion.
Initial reports put the death toll at three officers, but officials later confirmed the number of fatalities had risen significantly as recovery operations continued. Several police personnel were also injured and taken to hospitals in the region for treatment. Authorities declared emergency measures at nearby medical facilities to handle the casualties.
A militant organization calling itself Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. Pakistani officials said the group is believed to be linked to factions associated with Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban. The TTP has intensified attacks against police and military targets since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused militant groups of operating from safe havens across the Afghan border, an allegation denied by Taliban authorities in Kabul. Relations between the two countries have remained strained because of cross-border violence and security concerns.
The attack was one of the deadliest assaults on Pakistani security forces in recent months and underscored the continuing instability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Security operations were ongoing as authorities searched for additional suspects linked to the assault.
