Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens as NATO leaders prepared to meet in Turkey. The assault came hours after Ukrainian officials warned that Moscow was preparing another major strike and renewed calls for stronger Western air defenses.
A massive explosion lights up the night sky over Kyiv’s skyline during Russia’s large-scale aerial bombardment.
Russia launched waves of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones against Ukraine overnight into Monday, striking the capital, Kyiv, and several other regions in one of the largest aerial assaults in recent weeks. Ukrainian authorities said at least 10 people were killed and more than 40 others were injured after missiles hit residential neighborhoods, causing part of an apartment building in Kyiv's Podilskyi district to collapse and trapping residents beneath the rubble. Emergency crews searched through damaged buildings as fires burned across the city, while air raid sirens sounded for hours and thousands of residents took shelter in subway stations. Ukrainian officials said the barrage also caused damage in other districts of the capital.
The attack came less than a week after another deadly Russian strike on Kyiv and on the eve of a NATO summit in Ankara, where Ukraine's security and military support are expected to dominate discussions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned that intelligence indicated Russia was preparing another large-scale assault and again appealed to allies to accelerate deliveries of additional air defense systems, including Patriot missile batteries. Ukraine's air force said Russia fired dozens of missiles along with hundreds of drones in the overnight operation, intercepting many of the incoming weapons but acknowledging that several reached their targets.
Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces targeted military and infrastructure sites, while Ukrainian authorities said residential buildings and civilian areas suffered extensive damage. The latest bombardment underscored the continuing escalation of long-range attacks as the war enters its fifth year, with both Russia and Ukraine increasingly using missiles and drones to strike deep behind front lines. The renewed violence is expected to add urgency to discussions among NATO leaders over continued military assistance for Ukraine as the alliance weighs additional measures to strengthen the country's air defenses and sustain support against Russia's invasion.
