Russian Attack Prompts NATO Alert After Projectile Lands in Poland

Polish authorities are investigating an unidentified projectile that landed in the eastern part of the country during a large-scale Russian overnight attack on Ukraine, creating a crater and triggering an explosion near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the Ukrainian border. The incident occurred as Russia launched dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones against targets across Ukraine, killing at least 13 people and damaging civilian infrastructure from Kyiv to the western city of Lviv. Poland's military activated its air defence system and scrambled fighter aircraft, while NATO allies also monitored the developing situation as a precaution.

The Polish Armed Forces said the object entered or was suspected of entering Polish airspace during the attack before crashing in the Lublin region. Investigators secured the impact site and began examining debris to determine the projectile's origin. Officials had not publicly identified the object or confirmed whether it was a Russian missile, a drone or missile debris. The incident came as air raid alerts were issued in parts of eastern Poland because of the proximity of Russian strikes near the border, particularly around Lviv.
