Russian strike near Kyiv kills 38 after ammunition depot blast

A Russian drone strike on an ammunition depot near Kyiv triggered a massive explosion that killed at least 38 people and injured others, Ukrainian authorities said. The attack struck the town of Myla in the Bucha district as Russia continued an intensified aerial campaign against Ukraine.
Residential areas near Kyiv were damaged after a Russian drone strike triggered explosions at an ammunition storage facility.
The strike occurred late Friday at a facility storing artillery shells, mines, drones and other military equipment, according to Ukrainian officials. The initial drone attack caused a fire that was followed by multiple detonations, sending debris across nearby areas and damaging more than 50 residential buildings. A care facility was also affected, and emergency crews continued searching the site as authorities worked to account for those killed and injured. Reuters reported Sunday that the death toll had risen to 38, with four people still missing.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said authorities had opened a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the storage of explosives at the site, particularly because of its proximity to residential areas. Ukrainian officials have characterized the storage arrangements as a serious safety failure, while Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the strike and said it had targeted weapons-related infrastructure. The incident came during a broader wave of Russian attacks across Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine, with Ukrainian authorities reporting extensive use of drones and missiles in recent days.
The attack was among the deadliest strikes around Kyiv this year and underscored the risks created when military facilities are located near populated areas during a prolonged war. The blast also complicated emergency operations because unexploded and scattered munitions remained at the site. Ukrainian authorities said the investigation would examine whether storage procedures and the location of the facility complied with safety requirements, while rescue and cleanup operations continued.
