Gunfire near the White House triggered a major security response Saturday after Secret Service agents confronted an armed suspect near the presidential complex. Authorities said the suspect and a bystander were hospitalized following the shooting.
Secret Service officers and police respond after reports of gunfire near the White House in Washington on May 23, 2026.
Gunfire erupted near the White House on Saturday evening, triggering a lockdown and a major response from the U.S. Secret Service, FBI and local law enforcement agencies. Authorities said a suspect who allegedly opened fire near a White House security checkpoint was shot and taken to a hospital.
The shooting occurred near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House complex. Journalists on the White House North Lawn reported hearing what sounded like dozens of gunshots before Secret Service agents ordered members of the press to take cover inside the briefing room.
Law enforcement officials said the suspect fired at officers before agents returned fire. A bystander was also injured during the incident, according to multiple reports. Authorities said the suspect and the bystander were both transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, while no Secret Service officers were reported wounded.
FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were assisting the Secret Service with the investigation. President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House earlier in the day, though officials did not immediately disclose his exact location at the time of the shooting.
The incident heightened security concerns around the White House following several recent violent episodes near federal sites in Washington, including a shooting near the National Mall earlier this month and an armed incident connected to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April. Authorities continued to secure the area Saturday night as investigators worked to determine the suspect’s motive and reconstruct the sequence of events.
