U.S. President Donald Trump says Washington is reviewing its military footprint in Germany after a clash with Berlin over the Iran war, raising concerns about NATO unity.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday his administration is reviewing a possible reduction of American troops in Germany, a move that could strain ties with European allies and impact NATO. Trump said a decision would come “over the next short period of time” but did not give details.
The announcement follows a dispute with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the ongoing conflict with Iran. Merz criticized Washington’s approach and warned of economic fallout, while Trump accused the German leader of underestimating Iran’s nuclear threat.

Germany hosts more than 30,000 U.S. troops and key bases including Ramstein Air Base, a central hub for operations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Analysts say any reduction could affect NATO’s deterrence posture at a time of heightened global tensions.
The Iran conflict has disrupted energy markets and deepened divisions between the United States and its allies, with European leaders calling for greater coordination. Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for what he says is insufficient support.
Trump previously proposed cutting troop levels in Germany during his first term over defense spending disputes. No final decision has been announced.
