Tyler Robinson Ordered to Stand Trial in Charlie Kirk Killing

A Utah judge has ordered Tyler Robinson to stand trial in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Robinson faces aggravated murder and six other charges, with prosecutors pursuing a possible death sentence.

Utah District Judge Tony Graf ruled Tuesday that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence to establish probable cause against Robinson, 23, who is accused of killing Kirk at Utah Valley University in September 2025. Graf ordered him to stand trial on all seven counts, including aggravated murder, which makes Robinson eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Robinson pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors presented evidence including DNA, surveillance footage and a handwritten note they allege linked Robinson to the shooting. They argued that firing a high-powered rifle from more than 400 feet into a crowd of more than 3,000 people created a significant risk to others, satisfying an aggravating factor required for a capital murder charge. Defense attorneys disputed that argument and challenged the strength of the evidence, maintaining that Robinson targeted only Kirk.

Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and his parents were present for the ruling. In a statement released afterward, the Kirk family called the decision an important step toward justice, while highlighting the continuing impact of Kirk’s death on his children, who will grow up without their father. The family also expressed gratitude for those who have supported them during their grief and said they remain committed to a transparent and timely legal process.
