A man accused of opening fire during security operations at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is set to appear in federal court on Monday following a high-profile incident in Washington, D.C. that triggered a major security response at one of the capital’s most prominent political events.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, who was arrested after allegedly attempting to breach security at the Washington Hilton, where the event was being held.

Law enforcement officials say Allen was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives when he confronted security personnel outside the venue. A confrontation led to shots being fired, and a Secret Service agent was struck but protected by body armour.
The incident forced an evacuation of parts of the venue as federal agents secured the area, with senior officials and media figures present at the time.
Prosecutors are expected to pursue charges including assault on a federal officer and firearms offences, with further charges under consideration as the investigation continues. Authorities are also reviewing materials recovered from Allen’s hotel room that may indicate political motivations.
Allen, who has a background in engineering and education, remains in federal custody as officials assess both motive and security lapses surrounding the incident.
