Veteran actress Diane Ladd has passed away at the age of 89. The news was confirmed by her daughter, actress Laura Dern, who shared that Ladd passed away peacefully at her home in Ojai, California, with Dern by her side. Ladd's career spanned more than seven decades, during which she became known for her remarkable versatility across film, television, and stage. She earned three Academy Award nominations for her standout roles in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Wild at Heart, and Rambling Rose, solidifying her status as one of Hollywood’s most respected actresses.
Ladd was born in Laurel, Mississippi, on November 29, 1935, and began her acting career in the 1950s. She quickly established herself as a powerhouse, known for playing complex, memorable characters that left a lasting impact on audiences. Her collaborations with her daughter, Laura Dern, were particularly notable, with the two sharing nominations for Rambling Rose, a rare achievement for a mother and daughter in the industry.
Outside of her professional success, Ladd's personal life was marked by both tragedy and resilience. She and actor Bruce Dern had two daughters, though their elder child tragically passed away at just 18 months old in an accident. Later in life, Ladd married author and business executive Robert Charles Hunter, who passed away just months before her. In 2018, Ladd was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a serious lung disease, which she publicly battled in her final years.
As tributes pour in, Ladd is remembered not only for her expansive body of work but for the impact she had on the film industry and the generations of actors she inspired. Her passing marks the end of an era for a performer whose strength, creativity, and dedication to her craft made her a beloved figure in entertainment.
