John Forté, an American musician known for his work in hip-hop and collaborations with the group the Fugees, has died at the age of 50. He was found in his home in Chilmark, Massachusetts, on January 12, 2026, and authorities have indicated there were no signs of foul play. The Massachusetts state medical examiner’s office is reviewing the circumstances surrounding his death.
Forté came to prominence in the 1990s through his contributions to the Fugees’ acclaimed album The Score, which won a Grammy Award. He was associated with the broader Refugee Camp All-Stars collective and worked with artists including Wyclef Jean. In addition to his collaborative work, he released solo projects such as Poly Sci and I John.
A native of New York City, Forté’s career included both recording and producing music across genres. Earlier in his life, he faced legal issues related to drug charges in 2000 and received a prison sentence that was later commuted, allowing him to continue his creative work.
At the time of his death, Forté was living on Martha’s Vineyard with his family. He is survived by his wife and their two children.
