Police in Sydney have confirmed that twelve people were killed and at least a dozen more injured after gunfire erupted near Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025. The attack prompted a major emergency response, with officers urging residents and visitors to shelter in place as tactical units secured the area. Authorities later announced that the immediate threat had been contained, though investigations remain ongoing.
Two suspects were involved in the incident. One was shot dead at the scene, while the other was taken into custody. Police identified one of the attackers as Naveed Akram, a resident of Sydney’s southwest, and subsequently searched his home. The attack occurred close to a Jewish community gathering marking the start of Chanukah, intensifying concerns about extremist motives.
In addition to the casualties, police reported possible explosive devices under a footbridge and in vehicles linked to the suspects, leading to cordons and bomb squad deployment. Hospitals across Sydney, including St Vincent’s, received victims, with staff called in to manage the surge.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened the National Security Committee for urgent briefings, while New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon addressed the public to confirm the scale of the tragedy. Community leaders responded swiftly, with the Australian National Imams Council condemning the violence and calling for unity, while Jewish leaders described the attack as a terror incident. International figures, including Israel’s president, expressed condolences and highlighted concerns about antisemitism.
Bondi Beach remains cordoned off as forensic teams continue their work, and police have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow official updates. This marks one of the deadliest mass shootings in Australia in recent years, with twelve confirmed dead, twelve injured, and two suspects neutralized.
