The Buffalo Bills have fired head coach Sean McDermott following the team’s elimination from the NFL playoffs, ending his nine-season tenure with the franchise.
The decision comes after Buffalo’s overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round, a defeat that extended the team’s inability to advance to the Super Bowl during McDermott’s time in charge. The Bills reached the postseason multiple times under his leadership but fell short of a championship appearance.
McDermott, who took over as head coach in 2017, oversaw a period of sustained regular-season success. During his tenure, the Bills won several division titles and established themselves as consistent contenders in the AFC. Despite that progress, repeated playoff exits ultimately shaped the organization’s decision to make a coaching change.
General manager Brandon Beane will remain with the team and is expected to lead the search for a new head coach as Buffalo prepares for the upcoming season and the opening of its new stadium. The Bills are expected to evaluate both internal and external candidates as part of the process.
The move places Buffalo among several NFL teams making coaching changes following postseason disappointment, as franchises across the league reassess leadership ahead of the next season.
