CLEVELAND — Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry was struck in the face by a 99 mile-per-hour pitch during Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, leading to his removal from the field on a medical cart.
The incident occurred in the sixth inning at Progressive Field as Fry attempted a bunt against Tigers starter Tarik Skubal. The ball deflected off Fry’s bat and hit him squarely in the nose and mouth area. He immediately collapsed in the batter’s box, clutching his face as trainers and manager Stephen Vogt rushed to his side.
Fry remained on the ground for several minutes before being assisted to his feet. He was then taken off the field on a cart, drawing visible concern from teammates, opponents, and fans. George Valera replaced him in the lineup.
Skubal, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, appeared visibly shaken by the accident. Shortly afterward, he threw a wild pitch and committed a balk, allowing Cleveland to capitalize on the situation and score in the inning.
The Guardians have not yet released details on Fry’s condition. The team is expected to provide further updates following medical evaluation. His absence, if extended, could have a significant impact on Cleveland’s offensive depth as the team pushes through the late-season schedule.
