Patriots Hand Bills First Loss, Ending NFL’s Last Perfect Start in Week 5 Thriller

In a dramatic conclusion to the Week 5 game held at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, the Patriots secured victory with a 52-yard field goal in the final seconds. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye led the decisive drive, completing a critical pass under pressure to wide receiver Stefon Diggs, which set up the game-winning kick by Andy Borregales.
The Bills entered the game undefeated at 4–0 and were aiming to extend their streak of scoring 30 or more points in each of their first five games—a feat achieved by only six teams in NFL history. However, the Patriots’ defense held Buffalo to 20 points, disrupting their offensive momentum.
Drake Maye, making his first career start in a primetime NFL game, completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards. His performance included two touchdown drives in the second half, helping New England recover from a 10–3 halftime deficit. The final drive began with just over two minutes remaining and culminated in Borregales’ successful field goal with 15 seconds left.
Stefon Diggs, formerly a key player for Buffalo from 2020 to 2023, returned to Western New York for the first time since being traded to the Houston Texans in 2024. Now with New England, Diggs recorded 10 receptions for 146 yards, contributing significantly to the Patriots’ offensive success. His performance marked the first time a Patriots receiver posted consecutive 100-yard games in a season since.
The win improved the Patriots’ record to 3–2, while the Bills dropped to 4–1. The result also ended Buffalo’s 14-game home winning streak and marked New England’s first back-to-back victories since.
Head coach Mike Vrabel, in his first season leading the Patriots, has overseen a team in transition. The victory against a division rival and perennial playoff contender suggests progress in New England’s rebuilding efforts.
