Penn State Fires Head Coach James Franklin After Midseason Collapse
By Aurax Desk | October 12, 2025
Penn State University has dismissed head football coach James Franklin following a disappointing 3–3 start to the 2025 season. The decision comes after a series of unexpected losses, including a 22–21 home defeat to Northwestern, marking the team's third consecutive loss. Athletic director Pat Kraft emphasized the need for new leadership to meet the program's championship aspirations.
The Nittany Lions began the season with high expectations, entering as the No. 2 team in the nation. However, their momentum faltered with a double-overtime loss to Oregon, followed by a surprising defeat to previously winless UCLA. The loss to Northwestern further compounded the team's struggles, culminating in the firing of Franklin.
James Franklin served as Penn State's head coach for 12 seasons, compiling a 104–45 overall record. Under his leadership, the team secured a Big Ten Championship and made multiple appearances in New Year's Six bowl games, including a College Football Playoff semifinal last season. Despite these achievements, Franklin's tenure was marred by a 4–21 record against top-10 opponents, including a 1–10 mark in Big Ten matchups.
Franklin's dismissal triggers a substantial buyout clause of approximately $49 million, making it one of the largest in college football history. This financial commitment underscores the program's dedication to returning to national prominence.
Associate head coach Terry Smith, a former Penn State player and long-time assistant, has been appointed as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Smith faces the challenge of revitalizing the team amid a challenging schedule, beginning with an away game against Iowa.
The Nittany Lions now turn their focus to rebuilding under interim leadership. The team's performance in the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the program moving forward.
