In February 2026, Vinícius Júnior was at the center of another racism controversy during a UEFA Champions League playoff match between Real Madrid and Benfica in Lisbon. The incident triggered a match stoppage, sparked global debate, and prompted a UEFA investigation.
The alleged abuse occurred shortly after Vinícius scored the only goal in Real Madrid’s 1–0 victory.
Following his celebration, Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni confronted him.
Vinícius reported to the referee that Prestianni had used a racist slur, allegedly calling him a “monkey.”
The referee activated FIFA’s anti-racism protocol, and the match was halted for about 10 minutes.
After discussions with players and staff, the match resumed.
Vinícius later posted on social media:
“Racists are, above all, cowards.”
Reports also noted that objects were thrown toward him from the stands and he was jeered by sections of the crowd after play resumed.
Teammate Kylian Mbappé was among the most vocal supporters of Vinícius.
Mbappé confronted Prestianni on the pitch during the incident.
He later said he heard the alleged slur repeated several times.
Mbappé called for the Benfica player to be banned from the Champions League if the accusations were confirmed.
He said he was ready to leave the field in protest but continued after speaking with Vinícius.
Other Madrid players, including Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde, also backed Vinícius’s account.
Prestianni denied the allegation, saying:
Vinícius “misinterpreted” what he heard.
He had never directed racist insults at the Brazilian.
Benfica officials argued that the noise and distance between players made it unlikely that others could have heard the alleged slur.
Manager José Mourinho attempted to take a neutral stance but drew criticism after comments suggesting Vinícius’s goal celebration may have contributed to the incident.
UEFA quickly opened an official probe.
A disciplinary inspector was appointed to investigate “discriminatory behaviour” during the match.
Under UEFA rules, a player found guilty of racist insults faces a minimum 10-match suspension.
Real Madrid said they submitted evidence to support Vinícius’s claim.
The incident is part of a longer pattern.
Vinícius has filed 18 legal complaints over racist abuse since 2022.
In 2024, three fans in Spain were jailed for racially abusing him—an unprecedented conviction.
These repeated cases have made him one of the most prominent figures speaking out against racism in football.
The controversy reignited major questions:
1) Effectiveness of anti-racism protocols
Vinícius criticized the system, saying it often fails to deliver accountability.
2) Player solidarity
Mbappé’s public defense of his teammate was widely praised as an example of unity against racism.
3) Leadership and accountability
Mourinho’s comments sparked backlash from anti-racism groups who said they downplayed the seriousness of the allegations.
UEFA’s investigation will determine whether disciplinary action is taken.
The return leg of the tie is scheduled to be played in Madrid.
If guilt is established, a lengthy suspension could follow.
The February 2026 incident once again placed racism in football under the global spotlight. While the investigation continues, the episode reinforced two realities: that the problem persists at the highest levels of the sport, and that player solidarity—like Mbappé’s defense of Vinícius—has become a powerful response in the ongoing fight against discrimination.
