PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Police have detained a 26-year-old man in connection with the death of Mercedez Layne, a St Francis Erin R.C. School student whose body was found in Erin less than 24 hours after she was reported missing.
Investigators said the child left her grandfather’s home in Rancho Quemado on Saturday and was later reported missing when she failed to arrive at her destination. Surveillance footage reviewed by police helped identify a vehicle in which she was last seen, which was later found abandoned along Beach Road in Palo Seco. Hours afterward, an oilfield worker discovered her body along an access road off Carapal Road in Erin, prompting a large-scale police response involving homicide detectives and forensic teams.
The nation is reeling from the tragedy, with Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles issuing a statement on June 7 expressing profound sorrow and extending condolences to the child’s family. Beckles said the case had shaken the entire country, affecting not only relatives but also classmates, teachers at Erin R.C. School, and the wider community.
She commended the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, the Hunters Search and Rescue Team, volunteers, and members of the public for their efforts during the search, describing their work as deserving of high recognition. Beckles also said the loss of a child is an unbearable tragedy and stressed that no family should be forced to endure such grief.
In her statement, she pointed to what she described as growing concerns over missing and abducted children and urged stronger coordination among state agencies to improve child protection systems and public safety awareness. While calling for vigilance among parents and guardians, she also urged patience as police continue their investigation and emphasized that justice must follow due legal process. She added that the country must remain united in supporting law enforcement efforts and ensuring accountability.
